A 58-year-old woman from New York is currently facing seven different felony charges for allegedly committing immigration fraud and stealing more than $30,000 from student visa holders. According to officials at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the accused woman allegedly promised students from Europe and Asia help getting their green cards in exchange for direct cash payments.

Using her position as an ESL teacher, the woman allegedly:

  • Gained the trust of these student visa holders
  • Encouraged them not to renew their current visas, leaving them without adequate documentation when these visas expired
  • Charged students between $8,500 and $10,500 for “help” getting their green cards, though no applications were ever reportedly filed on behalf of the individuals who had given the accused money for this purpose
  • Allegedly defrauded at least 6 students.

The Immigration Fraud Charges & A Warning to those Pursuing an Immigration Status Change

Currently, the woman at the center of this immigration fraud scandal is facing a number of serious felony charges, including:

  • 4 counts of third degree grand larceny
  • 2 counts of fourth degree grand larceny
  • 1 count of first degree scheme to defraud.

Noting the importance of bringing those who commit immigration fraud scams to justice, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. (who is heading up the prosecution of this case) explained:

Making it in a foreign country requires courage and determination… In this case, the defendant allegedly used her position as an ESL teacher to take advantage of students seeking to improve their English by falsely promising that she could obtain green cards for them. Because of the prevalence of scams involving phony immigration service providers, I encourage anyone who believes that he or she may have been a victim to call my Office’s Immigrant Affairs Unit hotline at 212-335-3600, regardless of immigration status.
