New study says more naturalized immigrants could boost economy

As many Los Angeles residents are aware, we are living in uncertain economic times. While the bricks are being laid to a better financial future, nothing is a guarantee. This is especially important for immigrants who are awaiting naturalization or are here illegally, as they face unique difficulties in earning decent wages.

Well a new study by the Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration says that by naturalizing immigrants who are eligible for such a process could be very beneficial for both the naturalized citizen and the economy.

The study says that by naturalizing immigrants, the U.S. economy could receive a vast injection of wealth — somewhere in the wide range of $37 billion to $52 billion. The study contends that about $21-$45 billion of that will come from an increase in personal earning for the naturalized citizens, who could theoretically get an 8-11 percent bump in earnings.

Nearly a quarter of U.S. immigrants are eligible for naturalization, which is far from a simple process. However, achieving naturalization is a tremendous moment for any immigrant seeking to be recognized as a U.S. citizen. The naturalized citizen has a greater ability to gain employment; their family can feel more secure being in the country; and they can invest in their child’s future.

As we mentioned, the naturalization process can be complicated. There are numerous requirements that must be met (continuous living period in the U.S., good moral character, lack of criminal history, etc.) and an experienced immigration attorney can help an applicant achieve their goals of being recognized as a U.S. citizen.
